Why Democracy not Dictatorship?
The main reason he chooses “democracy” over “dictatorship” is because he spent a lot of his writing and works criticizing ideologies such as “totalitarianism” and political dishonesty. He has performed roles from a policeman, an assistant in a bookshop, a school teacher, a private tutor, a Tribune after WWII and finally a writer. Therefore it is because of his experiences he has been though, especially the world wars, that affected his political views. Orwell considers himself as a “Democratic socialist” and joined the Independent Labour Party in June of 1938 until after the second World War. Overall the reason for Orwell to choose “democracy” over “dictatorship” is because of his experience as an observer. When he was young Orwell went to a boarding school and noticed that they treated richer people better than the poorer ones (Bio True Story, George Orwell biography), then when he became a writer he wrote in different perspectives of society and in one of his novel, Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), he explores the brutality of the working class which again expresses his experiences and observations. In 1937, Orwell travelled to spain in order to fight against General Francisco Franco during the Spanish civil war and got shot in his arm and throat disabling him from speaking for several weeks (Bio True Story, George Orwell biography) Through all these lively experiences in living through multiple nations, fighting for them and notifying the differences of people in society he chooses to have a democratic socialist view.
Reason/Success?Orwell represented democracy through animals as he wants to express his views and experience, more specifically to criticize the Stalin era. The novel was written during WWII and published in 1945 and it reflects on the corruption of leaders.
Orwell was successful in expressing his perspective and his opinion through this novel as the methodology is engaging, the theme of animals, instead of rewriting the actual event (Russian Revolution). In the novel there were a lot of sceneries where animals are being slaughtered which represents humans being executed, this shows one of the few characteristics of war and revolution which is, as a consequence, people die. Through the deaths of animals it is shown how leaders can be corrupted leaders such as Napoleon. Overall Orwell was successful in expressing his preference of Democracy through clearly expressing the negatives and consequences when society is ruled under one leader. |
